our dad was the first black man to preach on top of Stone Mountain - this photo is from that day - the city MLK mentions in his speech. I'm speechless thinking of his legacy. repost from my big sister @morganhnichols:

Having grown up in a town that Martin Luther King Jr. mentions in his famous speech, "I Have A Dream" (Stone Mountain, Ga.) this speech was one that always meant a lot to me, and I remember growing up reading it. I hadn't read it in a while so I read it this morning and this excerpt, among so many other things, really stood out to me. I remember wondering why MLK even mentioned Stone Mountain in his speech. I remember looking it up and learning that years before this speech, Stone Mountain had actually been the place of the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan. Learning this, I realized that MLK mentioning this mountain in his speech was more than just mentioning a landmark, but an actual place where there was history and where people lived...like me, who grow up in Stone Mountain in the 1990s. I remember looking at all of the places he mentioned is speech and just thinking about all of the history and the mountains and valleys in each of these places:
"Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
For me, it can still get overwhelming thinking about the history, the present, and the future of the nation I have always called home. It can still get overwhelming thinking about where we've been and where we still have to go, but I am confident in knowing that there is still a chance for freedom and there is still hope. And through every mountain and valley, we cannot give up. Thanks MLK for that lesson.

she's the brain behind the song "White Boots," the reason why "Hold Me" was ever recorded, stylist for any photoshoot I've done, reason I've ever been on TV or tour. she taught me how to read, sing and I'm pretty sure she potty trained me but I don't really remember and that's possibly too much information.
